Description:The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission seeks a high-performing individual, with strong leadership and people skills, interested in contributing to sustainable fisheries management as Science Director. The successful candidate will serve as the principal science advisor for the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and the Executive Director. The position is based in Washington, D.C. The Commission coordinates state management of marine fisheries from Maine to Florida under an interstate compact ratified in 1942.Duties: The Science Director manages the Science Department staff and directs the Commission’s marine science program including stock assessment activities, fisheries data collection programs, and scientific support to the states. The Director coordinates federal, state, and university scientists who provide advice to ASMFC. The Director works with a diverse group of Commissioners, agency employees and stakeholders involved in the management of marine fisheries. The Director supervises a staff of five fisheries professionals; administers federal grants; represents ASMFC before state and federal fisheries management agencies in addition to other duties assigned by the Executive Director. Overnight travel is required. Qualifications: Ph.D. or Masters in fisheries, ocean science, marine policy or biology and at least five years of progressive experience at the Masters’ level with strong leadership qualities. High interest in fisheries management/ocean issues required. Strong interpersonal and communication abilities required. Proven writing and editing skills, and experience in developing policy or position statements should be demonstrated. Experience in, or the ability to acquire working knowledge of, fisheries stock assessment methods and fisheries management principles required. Experience with scientific and research issues preferred. Personnel and budget management experience preferred. Salary will be commensurate with educational credentials and previous relevant experience. United States citizenship required.
